Brief History

The School of Veterinary Medicine, Wolaita Sodo University, was established in 2010/11. It started its six year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program during the 2010/11 academic year with 45 students admitted by Ministry of Education with a total number of 8 staff (one Expatriate staff). The number of staff and facilities available at that time was appropriate only to handle first year courses. During the past five years of existence, the school had been making tremendous efforts and tasks of fulfilling and expanding the necessary man power, laboratory, staff accommodations and other facilities, to accommodate students.

Currently, the academic and administrative staff in the school reached 31 personnel; and the number of regular students in the DVM program (year I to year V) is 198. The academic staff on duty numbers are 22, with 1 Associate Professor (PhD), 9 Assistant Professors (MSc), and 13 lecturers (DVM). There are also 3 laboratory assistants with BSc degree in veterinary laboratory technology and 2 diploma holder technical assistances. The administrative support staff at school level contains 3 individuals.

Since October 2012, the school had been running a summer in-service BSc degree program in Animal Health, following the demand of the Bureau of Agriculture, SNNPR. This program was intended to upgrade diploma holders in Animal Health and Animal Production to BSc. degree level to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and attitude which enable them to be essential actors in livestock diseases prevention, control, treatment as well as livestock resources management of the region. The program enrolled the first 67 students in October 2012. Currently, the number of summer students in the BSc degree program (year I to year III) reached 215.

At present, the school is undertaking tremendous efforts of fulfilling and expanding the necessary laboratory, clinic, farms, other facilities and requirements. Currently, the school has seven laboratories (Veterinary Anatomy Laboratory, Veterinary Microbiology Laboratory, Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging, Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Histopathology and Multipurpose Laboratory, and Computer Laboratory) with quality setups and replenished with chemicals, models, equipments and all necessary laboratory infrastructures.
