Wolaita Sodo University (WSU) is one of the second generation public high institutions in Ethiopia located in Wolaita Sodo town, 315 km faraway from Addis Ababa via Butajira-Alaba to Wolaita Sodo. Its foundation was laid in the current location on March 27, 2007 E.C. The university commenced teaching and learning with its first batch of 801 (609 male & 192 female) students in four faculty and 16 departments.
In the past few years, WSU made remarkable and multifarious progress in program diversification and campus expansion. Currently, the university functions in three campus premises (Gandaba, Ottona and Dawuro Tarcha). The university has also made its own relentless effort in extensive renovation and expansion work to create enabling environment for teaching, learning and research endeavors.
WSU is committed to provide undergraduate, graduate & other training programs that will enable students to attain their fullest potential intellectually, ethically and morally.
Thus, the university is currently running 43 undergraduate, 24 graduates (one PhD program) programs in six collages and three schools. It offers courses in regular, evening, weekend and summer modalities. The student enrollment has shown growth and reached from 801 in 2007 to 23,000 in 2016 G.C.
In 2015/16 academic year, the staff composition also boosted to 2918 (1214 academic & 1704 administrative). For the previous successive years the university also graduated over 23 thousand students in undergraduate & post graduate programs in all modes of delivery.
The university also involved in divergent mainstreaming research & community services and has gained considerable achievements. WSU conducted 56 problem solving research and delivered 21 need based community and consultancy service in catchment areas (Wolaita & Dawuro zone). So far, the university has published and disseminated four proceedings and hosted four national research conferences.
